ORATORICAL
The purpose of The American Legion’s National High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.
Post 29 Youth Wins Departmental High School Oratorical Competition
He did it! Joseph Rondone, an 11th grade home schooler
who won our Post 29 Oratorical Competition on February 6, went on to win at the
District, Area, and Department levels. Facing his stiffest competition to date,
Joseph's oration, Responsible
Ownership, and
his assigned topic presentation on Amendment V to the Constitution,
earned him the right to compete in next month's National Finals in Indianapolis
on April 9 th through 11th. There Joseph will be competing with Departmental
representatives from around the country, the winner receiving over $20,000.00
in college scholarships.
Joseph will be presenting his winning
oratory to a combined Legion/Auxiliary session on Thursday, April 1, at 7:30.
You are invited and encouraged to attend this celebration of Americanism. The
meeting will be proceeded by dinner, beginning at 6:30. At only $5 per person
for dinner, this represents one of life's great bargains!

Oratorical Chairman Roy Lantz wishes to recognize the many volunteers at our
Post competition who helped make Joseph's victory possible; Commander Bill
Beaudin and his wife Lorri, Sam Perry, Gail Evilsizor, Chaplain Chuck Johnson,
Tommy Townsend, Amador Rodriquez, Larry Diehl, Neal Lawrence, Auxiliary
President Jane Lawrence, and Al Friel. A very special thanks is offered
to Al, who suggested that we approach Joseph, a member of his Scout Troop,
to enter the competition. A huge thank you is also offered to
Departmental Oratorical Chairman Dave Burdette, from Post 304, to Post 304
Commander Alan Johnson and to Post 304 member Richard Ray. If you have a child
or grandchild (or great-grandchild!) or neighbor or church member, or any kid
you know, who will be in grades 9 through 12 next year, please have them
consider entering the competition. With over $20,000.00 in prizes awaiting
them, why would you not?
